
Albert John Thiry, of Wilmington, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was 73.
He played basketball on scholarship in 1961 with Wilmington College (now UNC-Wilmington). He also enjoyed racquetball, was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and served in the National Guard. He retired from General Electric Nuclear Division in Wilmington after 33 years of employment. Mr. Thiry was affectionately referred to as “Pop-Pop” by his grandchildren whom he loved so very much.
He was born in Monessen, Pa. on Nov. 18, 1940, and was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Thiry and Barbara Flesch Thiry and siblings, Eva Zippay, Marie Simonsen, Frank Thiry and Anthony Thiry.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Reeves Thiry; sons, Craig C. Thiry, wife, Kristie and their children, Corey and Kaylin and Brad S. Thiry, wife, Becky and their children, Brianna and Brooke, all of Wilmington; brothers-in-law, Scott Reeves (Connie) and Fred Simonsen; sisters-in-law, Barbara Behrendt (Bill) and Jeri Reeves; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 South College Road, Wilmington followed by a funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to a charity of individual preference.
