
Jay Lauder Smith, of Wilmington, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was 71.
Mr. Smith retired from Piedmont Airlines after over 27 years of service. He was a member of Wrightsboro Baptist Church and for 10 years, he was a member of the Scotts Hill Volunteer Fire Dept. Before joining Wrightsboro Baptist Church, he was a charter member of Freedom Baptist Church and served as a deacon and Sunday School Director at both churches.
He was born May 2, 1942, in Wilmington and was preceded in death by his parents, John B. Smith and Rosa Lee Permenter Smith; sister, Peggy Lockamy; and his twin brother, Ray L. Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Barnhill Swart Smith; children, Bryant Smith, of Hampstead, Becky Garrison and husband, Tommy, of Mooresville and Byron Smith and wife, Laura, of Wilmington; grandchildren, Kimberly, Spenser, Alan, Scarlett and Marcos; sisters, Blondell Abrams, Faydene Corbett, Mickey Turlington and Janis Stone; step-children, Donna Marie Jones, Charles Ray Swart and wife, Dr. Deede Swart and Brian Keith Swart; step-grandchildren, Brandon, Charles, Kevin, Sean, Tyler, Connor, Steve, Jack and Pete; and great-grandchildren, Brenden, Annie, Brylie, Holly and Colton.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at Wrightsboro Baptist Church with the Rev. Brad Harrison and the Rev. Mike Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
