Thomas H. Florkiewicz, of Southport, died Saturday Jan. 11, 2014, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was 59.

He was a devoted community servant to the city of Southport serving in numerous capacities for many years, including being a member of Southport Fire Department, Southport Rescue Squad and served with Southport Police Department. He loved the Fourth of July Festival and could always be found at the waterfront enjoying the beauty and scenery of the Cape Fear.

Mr. Florkiewicz was an avid photographer and enjoyed all the movies filmed in Southport. He was a retired Fire Inspector with Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point and enjoyed teaching Fire Prevention and Safety every year with the Southport Fire Department, going to the schools in the county and surrounding areas. He was devoted to the city of Southport and the people of the town. He gave his whole life to any charity involving the Southport Fire Department or Southport Rescue Squad and was an auxiliary policeman with Southport Police Department. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Mr. Florkiewicz was born in Schenectady, N.Y. on Oct. 10, 1954, and was preceded in death by his parents, Edward John and Marion Jeanne Wickham Florkiewicz Floyd.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Jones Florkiewicz; his best, worst and only daughter, Ariel R. Florkiewicz and fiance, Joshua German; sisters, Carol Norwood and husband, Ron of Oviedo, Fla., Anne Castro and husband, O.G., of Lexington, S.C.; and nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at the Chapel of Peacock-Newnam &White Funeral Service, Southport with the Rev. Charles Drew officiating. Burial will follow at the Northwood Cemetery with Fireman’s Honors accorded by the Southport Fire Department.
