WILMINGTON — A Wilmington local was recognized by Attorney General Jeff Jackson for services to the local community last week.

Roxann Lansdowne, executive director of Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, received the Dogwood Award on Friday, Feb. 13, in a ceremony by the North Carolina Department of Justice. The Dogwood Award is granted to people who improve other North Carolinians’ health, safety, and well-being.

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard is a nonprofit organization that distributes emergency food to those in need in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties through the help of volunteers, other community organizations, and local businesses. The organization has been operating for 35 years and has served 21,119 households year-to-date, 76,671 individuals year-to-date, and 2,700 new clients year-to-date.

“When the federal government threatened to cut SNAP benefits, 1.4 million North Carolinians had to prepare to put food on their tables without this critical assistance,” the attorney general said in a release. “The work that Roxann and her team at Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard did to provide meals during this time was a lifeline for many folks in eastern North Carolina.”
