WILMINGTON — The Historic Wilmington Foundation announced Tuesday that its executive director, William Stoltz, will be stepping down at the end of the month.

Stolz took the helm of the foundation in September 2024, relocating to Wilmington from Ohio. He will now be returning to Ohio, yet remains available to assist HWF with the transition to new leadership.

“It is with true sadness that I announce my departure from HWF and return to
Ohio due to unexpected family reasons,” Stolz said in a press release. “HWF is a wonderful organization. I am very proud to have had the opportunity to contribute to a group dedicated to historic preservation and the historic resources, people, and communities throughout the Lower Cape Fear Region. I am especially proud of our work restoring two 100 year-old bungalows for affordable workforce housing, our advocacy in support of the historic district in the face of challenges like the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement, and our very successful Azalea Festival Home Tour showcasing the Oleander historic neighborhood. I thank the supportive Board of Trustees and fantastic staff for the opportunity to serve.”

Trisha Wilson, president of HWF’s Board of Trustees, commended Stolz for his work and noted a search committee is tasked with filling the executive director’s position.

Since 1966 the Historic Wilmington Foundation has worked to preserve the region’s built history through advocacy, education, preservation easements, a revolving fund, and more. Its mission is to preserve and protect the irreplaceable historic resources in Wilmington and the Lower Cape Fear Region. It is a 501c3 serving New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties.
