Free movies to take place at Portia Hines Park this fall

WILMINGTON — Area organizations are banding together to bring the community free family-friendly films in downtown Wilmington.

Northside Movie Nights kick off at Portia Hines Park on Sept. 27, 5:30 p.m., as hosted by Northside Food Co-op, Cucalorus Film Foundation, Wilson Center, the City of Wilmington and DREAMS Center for Arts Education. There will be a vendor market and free food provided by the co-op, which is planning a grocery store on the Northside.

Around 7 p.m. the films will screen, with chairs and blankets welcome for the film screening.

“We love any opportunity to create community cohesion through free family friendly events,” Northside Food Co-op Cierra Washington said in a press release.

The co-op hosts weekly farmers markets and bi-weekly community dinners, both held on the Northside.

On Sept. 27, “The Proud Family Movie” comedic adventure follows a family who take an all-expenses paid trip but end up being held captive by a mad scientist.

“Inside Out 2” will screen Oct. 11. The Pixar movie goes through protagonist Riley’s various emotions as she reaches her teenage years. It’s business as usual for Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust — until Anxiety shows up.

Then on Oct. 25, another Pixar classic, “Coco” will screen. It’s also a Halloween celebration at movie night, with attendees encouraged to dress up for the occasion. The movie follows Miguel, who desires to be a musician, but learns his family history along he way.
