20-year-old in custody following car crash, charged with six counts property damage

WILMINGTON — A 20-year-old Wilmington man is behind bars after a vehicle accident that damaged property along the way.

Matthew Kleinfelter hit four mailboxes and another vehicle, prior to crashing his car on Long Leaf Hills Drive. Wilmington Police Department officers responded to the collision at Long Leaf Hills and Pine Cone drives around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Kleinfelter escaped the car and fled on foot before being located by WPD shortly after. The suspect was evaluated by EMS before being taken into custody. While at the hospital, Kleinfelter spit on an officer and was very combative, according to the press release.

Once medically cleared, Kleinfelter was taken to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. He’s being charged with six counts of hit/run property damage, failing to maintain lane, failure to reduce speed, DWI, driving after consuming alcohol under 21, and malicious conduct by a prisoner.

Kleinfelter is being held under a $15,000 secured bond.
