SURF CITY — More than 2,000 people turn up annually on New Year’s Day in a Pender County beach town to plunge into the Atlantic Ocean for a cause.
The 2022 Dolphin Dip is open to anyone — families and their pets — for free. Dippers meet at the Roland Avenue Beach Access at 11 a.m. A costume contest takes place as well and participants are encouraged to dress up for the plunge. A horn sounds at noon for swimmers to “wash away” the woes of 2022.
Proceeds from T-shirt and merchandise sales (cash only), as well as donations benefit Share the Table. The nonprofit helps feed those in need in Holly Ridge, Surf City, Hampstead, Rocky Point, Scotts Hill, Sneads Ferry, Jacksonville, Topsail Beach, and North Topsail Beach.
The faith-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization is supported by seven charter churches, community churches, civic organizations, and local businesses in Pender and Onslow counties. Share the Table provides free community meals, operates a food pantry, and has a school backpack program. Share the Table serves over 1,000 residents in Pender and Onslow weekly.
