New Year’s Eve Blueberry Drop to add fireworks display

BURGAW — A five-year tradition in Pender County is getting a new fireworks show.

The Blueberry Drop, a New Year’s Eve celebration hosted by a mix of local government departments and the North Carolina Blueberry Festival in Burgaw, brings out food, entertainment to the historic train depot at 115 S. Dickerson St.

“The annual Blueberry Drop has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in the last four years due to the hard work of our committee,” Burgaw Parks and Recreation director Cody Suggs said in a press release.

Suggs said 2021’s event was the best-attended yet and this year the celebration will add a fireworks display by Hale Artificer, a Lexington-based firm. The event opens at 5 p.m. and the fireworks show will follow the drop at 7 p.m., which is Greenwich Mean Time.

The fireworks will be visible from the event grounds or parking areas marked throughout the town. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. The organizing committee strongly discourages outside coolers, pets and alcohol.

Entertainment will be provided by Kannapolis-based Ace Party Band, which will perform a mix of genres from across the decades.

Food trucks and vendors include Lane’s Ferry Food Truck, Port City Que, Something Good Food Truck, Topdog Hotdogs and Catering, Chris’ Cosmic Cheesecakes and Jay’s Funnel Cakes. The Burgaw Lions Club will sell hot chocolate.
