UNCW cancels controlled burn due to weather

WILMINGTON — UNCW had scheduled a controlled burn in a longleaf pine forest on campus for Tuesday, Jan. 4. Because of weather conditions, the burn has been cancelled.

The burn would have affected 67 acres, bordered by Carleton Place, Clear Run Creek, Rose Avenue and UNCW forest areas.

“The controlled burn decreases the chances of a more intense and hazardous wildfire by destroying the fuel load of the accumulated layer of leaf litter and improves the health of the longleaf pine forest, which is a fire-dependent ecosystem,” according to a press release.
