SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Just above Riegelwood, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers will close Cape Fear River Lock and Dam 1 through the fall in order to improve a passageway so that fish can better migrate upstream toward spawning areas.
Led by Cape Fear River Watch, the Lock and Dam 1 Fish Passage Improvement Project will modify the current rock arch fishway, which has impeded passage, according to state and federal resource agencies as well as academic institutions. The aim is to make the striped bass and sturgeon population more sustainable in the Cape Fear River.
The project is being funded by the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, N.C. State Port Authority, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Heavy equipment has been in use at the location site since mid-July, and the facility will remain closed until the Army Corps wraps the project, slated to be complete in November 2021.
