More than 50 New Hanover County middle and high school students have been selected for district honor bands.
Students from across the state traveled to Greenville earlier this month to audition for the N.C. Band Association (NCBA) Eastern District Honor Band at the middle and high school levels.
There, they performed scales and solo pieces for a panel of judges, who rank them against their peers in order to determine who qualified.
Twenty-eight students from New Hanover County–representing six NHCS middle schools–were selected for the middle school band.
And 37 high school students were picked for the 190-member high school honor band.
All 55 students will travel to East Carolina University in Greenville on Jan. 31 to rehearse with other members of the All-District bands. They will spend two days rehearsing and will perform a concert at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 at the Wright Auditorium on the ECU campus.

Brunswick County Schools seeking feedback on calendar
The Brunswick County school district is asking parents, community members and staff to weigh in on two options for the 2014-15 traditional academic calendar. A brief online survey is available online at www.bcswan.net. Both versions of the calendar were created by the system’s calendar committee, which is comprised of one parent and one staff member from every school. Each draft complies with all state calendar laws.
The survey will be open through the close of business on Monday, Jan. 20. Results will be shared with the Brunswick County Board of Education at an upcoming curriculum committee meeting.
