New Hanover County Schools have been awarded $54,000 in grants from the Landfall Foundation and $1,000 from Walmart Foundation and Facility No. 1348.
Ten schools were among the recipients, while other partnering programs received grants that will directly impact student success, according to New Hanover County Schools Spokeswoman Debora Trafton.
Ashley High School Band Boosters Club received $6,000 for sectional music lessons to provide 115 students with individual music lessons. The Ashley ROTC Booster Club was awarded $1,000 for the cadet orientation trip. This grant will provide 44 cadets with a trip to Camp Lejeune.
Ashley also received a $1,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation and Facility No. 1348 through its Local Community Contribution/Hunger Outreach Grant Program to be used by the school’s orchestra, Trafton said.
College Park Elementary School received a $4,300 school uniforms and enhanced learning grant to cover the cost of school uniforms for students who cannot afford them.
Forest Hills Global Elementary School has been granted $3,800 toward the improving learning through technology program. The program provides video equipment to improve learning and familiarity with technology.
Hoggard High School’s band booster club received $6,000 to replace marching band uniforms with new ones for 100 students. Hoggard High School’s PTSA has been granted $1,870 for the college campus tour program to cover the cost of transportation for low-income students to North Carolina colleges.
Lake Forest Academy received a $2,577 grant for the purchase of Wii equipment to be used in the “Wii like to exercise” program. The Wii video game system will be used by 50-60 special needs students.
Murray Middle School’s orchestra has been awarded $4,343 for new musical instruments to be used by students from year to year.
Murrayville Elementary School has been granted $5,000 to purchase 10 iPads, accessories and applications for 48 kindergarten students.
New Hanover High School’s band received $5,760 to be used toward individual music lessons for 75-90 students in the school band who cannot otherwise afford lessons.
Noble Middle School’s PTA has been granted $4,000 for the purchase of an iPad Learning Cart. The cart will serve as a learning lab for 725 students.
Roland-Grise Middle School has been awarded $6,000 to fund the “21st Century Literacy at Roland-Grise Middle School” program. The grant will help to purchase a class set of 35 electronic readers that will be used by teachers and students in classroom settings.
Sunset Park Elementary’s PTA has been granted $3,300 for the “Guys Read: Boys Book Club.” This grant will provide a library and reading room for boys who struggle with reading. It will focus on 180 boys while the materials will be available to 384 students.
Other grants that will provide services to NHCS students include a $6,000 grant awarded to Community in Schools of the Lower Cape Fear towards the Partnership for School Success (PASS) program. The program provides reading tutoring for students to pass exams to attain grade level. First Book-New Hanover County also received $6,000 for the “Reading is the Key” program. The program provides two to three books for low-income students throughout seven New Hanover County schools. Nearly 900 second and third grade students will benefit directly from First Book.
