NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The North Carolina Hunt State Policy Fellows has its sixth class of statewide elected officials to work on education policy. The vice chair of the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners has ben selected to join the group.
Dane Scalise will take part in the program, which started from the bipartisan Hunt Institute established by former Gov. Jim Hunt. An affiliate of the Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy, the North Carolina Hunt State Policy Fellows equips officials with a foundation in education policy.
The group convenes for sessions covering early childhood education, K-12 systems, postsecondary attainment, and workforce development. It’s also a bipartisan effort, with work taking place across party lines as resource experts, state agency leaders, legislators, and educators identify strategies aiming to improve student outcomes.
“Strong schools matter to every family in our community, and I’m always eager to find ways to make our local schools even stronger,” Scalise said in a press release. “I am honored to join fellow leaders from across the state to explore solutions that help students succeed and strengthen opportunities for families in New Hanover County.”
Javaid Siddiqi, CEO of The Hunt Institute, pressed upon the initiative’s importance: “Students of all ages need local leaders who understand that strong communities begin with strong education systems and opportunities. I am excited to welcome this sixth cohort of North Carolina Hunt State Policy Fellows and look forward to the lasting impact they will make for communities across the state.”
