SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program will launch its Booze It or Lose It campaign for Halloween starting Monday and its message is clear: Don’t drink and drive.
Law enforcement agencies in the state’s 100 counties will increase patrols and checkpoints, in an effort to stop vehicular accidents due to impaired drivers. The campaign takes place from Monday, Oct. 27, through Sunday, Nov. 2.
“Driving under the influence is a choice that can have devastating consequences,” NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell said in a release.
According to the safety program, there were 588 DWI arrests last Halloween. As well there were 361 deaths from alcohol-related crashes across the state in 2024, while the amount of alcohol-related crashes almost reached 12,000.
Officials encourage anyone gong to Halloween parties or events where booze is served to designate a non-drinking driver, take a taxi or utilize ride-shares.
“A critical part of celebrating Halloween is planning ahead to ensure the safety of everyone,” Ezzell said.
