The Agenda: Meetings in local government this week

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government and community meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, it will be included, too.

Monday, Oct. 20

The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. in the NHC Courthouse, 24 N. Third St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Presentation of the NHC Destination 2050 Comprehensive Plan Update Final Goals and Future Land Use Map

The Wilmington City Council will hold an agenda review at 8:30 a.m. in City Hall at 929 N. Front St. Meetings are livestreamed here

Leland Town Council is holding a special meeting at 6 p.m. regarding open burning at Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way.

Kure Beach Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. in council chambers. The agenda includes a discussion about parking, as well as action on the text amendment regarding yard/setbacks for Gus Industries at 501 K Avenue. Meeting audio is uploaded here afterward.

Pender County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. at 15060 Highway 17 in Hampstead. The agenda includes the second reading of a Pender EMS and Fire retention package and consideration of a request from Maple Hill Volunteer Fire Department to be excluded from the emergency services merger. The meeting will livestream here.  

Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m., 30 Government Center Drive in Bolivia. The agenda includes a public hearing on Sewer Use Ordinance amendments and consideration of a Board of Education request to place the issue of a $349.6 million bond referendum to meet school capital needs on the March 3, 2026, ballot. Tuesday, Oct. 21

The Wilmington City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in city hall at 929 N. Front St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Update from Wilmington Housing Authority
  • Ordinance Making Supplemental Appropriation in the Amount of $5,300 to the Special Purpose Fund for the Cape Fear Garden Club, Inc. Grant to Construct a Vegetable Garden at Maides Park
  • Resolution to Execute a Registry Agreement with the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources to Further Protect and Preserve a Portion of the Natural Area Known as the South Wilmington Sandhills, Located within Halyburton Park

The Brunswick County Board of Education will meet at 9 a.m. at Brunswick County Schools Administrative Offices, 35 Referendum Drive. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • School improvement plan presentations
  • Purchase of 4 Classroom Modulars
  • Operations/Transportation Metal Roof Retrofit

New Hanover County Board of Elections will meet at 5 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at the Board of Elections Office, 226 Government Center Dr., to review absentee ballot applications and discuss other election-related matters as needed. Limited in-person seating will be available. The meeting is streamed here. 

The Brunswick County Board of Elections will have a meeting at 4 p.m. in the commissioners chamber, 30 Government Center Dr., to count absentee ballots and talk about election-related matters as needed. Members of the public may attend meetings in-person or virtually via live stream

Pender County Board of Elections will meet at 6 p.m. at 305 S. Walker St. to count absentee ballots and take up other elections matters as needed.

Wednesday, Oct. 22

The New Hanover County Schools Calendar Committee will meet at 4:30 p.m. in the Board of Education Center, 1805 S. 13th St. An agenda was not posted by press.

The Topsail Beach Planning Board will meet at 10 a.m. in the Topsail Beach Town Hall. The agenda includes review and discussion on amendments to the UDO on address signage. The meeting will livestream here

Thursday, Oct. 23

Wave Transit meets at 12:30pm at Forden Station, 505 Cando St. A public comment period limited to 5 minutes per person will be offered at the meeting. For community members who wish to provide comment without attending, download the form here or pick one up from a Wave Transit transfer station. Completed forms must be submitted by 5 p.m. the day before the meeting via e-mail to info@wavetransit.com. An agenda was not posted by press.

The North Carolina State Ports Authority Board of Directors will meet at 9 a.m. in the Board Room of the North Carolina Maritime Building,113 Arendell St., Morehead City. Members of the public may join in person.

Carolina Bay Parkway Extension public meeting will take place at 5 p.m. at Sea Trail Convention Center, 75-A Clubhouse Rd., in Sunset Beach. The event is hosted by the N.C. Department of Transportation and the S.C. Department of Transportation. Public input is wanted on the Draft Environm​ental Impact Statement​. Review the document and submit your feedback using NCDOT’s online engagement platform​. Planning and development are underway by the N.C. Department of Transportation and the S.C. Department of Transportation to extend Carolina Bays Parkway (S.C. 31) from S.C. 9 in Horry County, S.C., across the North Carolina state line to U.S. 17 in Brunswick County. The proposed project would build a multi-lane highway and use some of the existing road, plus build-on new locations. The goal is to reduce congestion and delays on local roadways.​

CPUA Sustainability Committee meets at 2 p.m. in the Jordan Conference Room, 236 Government Center Dr. The agenda includes action items on the artificial intelligence use policy and reframing sustainability. 

The Topsail Island Shoreline Protection Commission will meet at 2 p.m. in the Surf City Town Hall. The agenda includes an update on the status of the vitex dune project and review of Coastal Barrier Resource Act mapping changes. The meeting will livestream here
