The Agenda: Government meetings taking place this week

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government and community meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, it will be included, too.

Monday, July 21

The New Hanover County Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. in the NHC Courthouse, 24 N. Third St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Consideration of concluding county participation in Workforce Housing Advisory Committee and the Community Relations Advisory Committee. Read PCD coverage here.
  • Heron Cove rezoning of 10.8 acres on Gordon Road to a conditional district for a 57-lot subdivision. Read PCD coverage here.

Kure Beach Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers. The agenda includes a quasi-judicial hearing for a special use permit for Seamist Suites, approval for the Tour de Island Bike Ride on Kure Beach streets, and a discussion to amend the oceanfront deck encroachment ordinance.

Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m., 30 Government Center Drive. The meeting will be uploaded here and the agenda includes:

  • Presentation on potential ordinance changes to address stormwater and flooding concerns
  • Public hearing on the commercial property assessed capital expenditure program
  • Contract amendment for the Northwest Water Treatment Plant expansion project

North Carolina State Board of Elections will meet at 9 a.m. in the Board Room of the Dobbs Building, Third Floor, 430 N. Salisbury St., in Raleigh. Any member of the public may observe the meeting online here (password: NCSBE) or by phone dialing 415-655-0003, enter access code 2437 832 4661#, passcode 62723#. The agenda includes penalty waiver request for late campaign finance filing, county board complaint considerations, and resolution for municipal election administration.  

Leland Tourism Development Authority will meet at 11 a.m. at Leland Fire Station 51, 1984 Popular St. Multiple requests for grants are on the agenda, including for two events at Brunswick Beer and Cider, CiderFest in and Jazz Fest, and Leland Brewing Company’s Oktoberfest. Meetings aren’t recorded currently but the public can attend.

Tuesday, July 22

The Brunswick County Board of Education will hold committee meetings beginning at 9 a.m. in the Brunswick County Schools Administrative Offices, 35 Referendum Drive. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • BCS Strategic Plan – Year 1 Progress
  • Parents Bill of Rights Overview
  • New Elementary School Architect Memo

Carolina Beach Town Council will meet at 9 a.m. in Council Chambers, 1121 North Lake Park Boulevard. The agenda includes a presentation by the Army Corps of Engineers on wetland permitting (read PCD coverage here) and a Sunny Day Flooding project update. The meeting will livestream here.

New Hanover County Board of Elections meets at 5:30 p.m. at the BOE office at 226 Government Center Dr. Members of the New Hanover County Board of Elections will be sworn into positions for the 2025-2027 term; new members John Lyon and Beverly Setz, as well as former members Derrick R. Miller and James Battle Morgan, Jr. (Jim) to serve as NHC Board of Elections members for this term. NC State Auditor Dave Boliek appointed Jamie Getty as chair. After, they will conduct regular business and discuss early voting plans for the 2025 municipal elections. The meeting is open to the public online here.

The Pender County Board of Elections will meet at noon on July 22 at Pender County Board of Election Office, located at 807 S. Walker St., Burgaw. An agenda was not posted by press.

The Brunswick County Board of Elections will meet at noon on July 22 at the Commissioners’ Chambers of the David R. Sandifer Building, 30 Government Center Drive NE, in Bolivia. The agenda includes swearing in of new members, as well as approval of municipal early voting plan. The meeting is available to watch online here.

Southport Board of Aldermen are hosting a special meeting about proposals from architectural firms for the design and work on the Old City Hall/ Courthouse building. This meeting will also include recesses to allow each firm and the Board to tour the Old City Hall/ Courthouse building. It takes place at 9 a.m. in the Community Building, 223 E Bay St.

Southport Board of Adjustment will meet at 113 W. Moore St. at 4:30 p.m. The agenda includes an appeal from Andrew McVey for an administrative development decision made by city staff and code enforcement. The violation pertains to the installation of a fence and landscaping rocks located in the city’s rights-of-way adjacent to 416 E. Bay Street. The applicants were first issued a written violation under Chapter 16 of the City Code of Ordinances and Section 3.17.D of the Unified Development Ordinance in January 2024 with remedies to correct the violation. The most recent notice of violation was issued to the applicants on April 3, 2025. To date, the violation still exists.

Oak Island Business Advisory Board meets at 9 a.m. in the Police Department Training Room on the 2nd floor of the Police Department in Town Hall at 4601 E Oak Island Drive. An agenda was not posted by press.

Town of Leland Planning Board will meet at Leland Fire Station 51, 1984 Popular St, at 6 p.m. The agenda includes reappointing members and thereafter a rezoning request for 5.44-acre lot from its current zoning district C-1, General Commercial Business District and R-15, Medium Density Residential District to O&I, Office and Institutional District and CD, Conservation District.

Wednesday, July 23

Topsail Beach Planning Board will meet at 10 a.m. An agenda was not posted by press

Thursday, July 24

Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority will meet at 12:30 p.m. at Forden Station (505 Cando St. Wilmington, NC).  The agenda includes​​ a resolution approving Wave Connect Advisory Group’s recommendation for award of $70,000 in FTA Section 5310 Community Grant Project Funds to the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center for transportation of elderly persons and persons with disabilities. A local match of $14,000 will be provided by New Hanover County for a total project cost of $84,000. Updates by WAVE leadership will also be given. The meeting is open to the public, though virtual attendance is not available.

CFPUA Sustainability Committee meets at 2 p.m., followed by the Long Range Planning Committee at 3 p.m. Both take place in the Jordan Conference Room at 235 Government Center Dr. An agenda was not posted for the sustainability meeting, though the long range agenda includes an asset accrual report and an update on 1,4-dioxane and potential treatment strategies.
