WILMINGTON — The city is moving to its next phase of brick restoration downtown with work to commence next week.
On Oct. 16, crews will close the block of Front and Castle streets in all directions to rehabilitate this section of roadway to a brick street. Drivers will have the chance to turn before reaching a dead-end of the closure and residents who live on the block will still have access.
The roadway will be closed for two to three weeks while work is underway. Traffic control measures will be in place with signage and barricades.
It’s the next phase in the city’s efforts to restore brick roadways downtown. Work just wrapped on the block of Front Street between Castle and Queen streets and will move to the next block next week.
The project involved removing existing asphalt that currently covers a partial layer of bricks, working with existing bricks to create a solid roadway and adding historic bricks where needed.
The result will be a fully rehabilitated brick street, meeting council’s 2017 adopted resolution that created a brick street policy to preserve historic material.
