Firearm screenings at ILM down, uptick at larger NC airports

WILMINGTON — The state security department that screens travelers’ carry-on items noticed a slight gain in detected firearms during the first half of 2023 statewide.

However, at Wilmington International Airport, figures are moving downward.

The Transportation Security Administration agents at ILM have found two firearms since January 2023, according to an update by TSA. It’s slightly decreased from this time last year, when three firearms had been obtained by mid-year.

A total of five were commandeered in total throughout 2022.

Statewide, 130 firearms overall have been found in carry-on luggage during the first half of 2023; it’s a small increase over the same time period last year, which had 128.

Most boosts were found at larger airports across the state, including Charlotte Douglas International (up by 14), Raleigh-Durham International (up by five) and Piedmont Triad International (up by five).

Asheville Regional Airport and Albert J. Ellis in Jacksonville both decreased, by seven and five respectively.

Local law enforcement agencies that man the airport are notified immediately when TSA locates a firearm at a security checkpoint. The officer of the acting agency takes it from the X-ray tunnel to address with the traveler.

“In addition to potential criminal citations, travelers face civil penalties for bringing firearms to the security checkpoint and TSA evaluates each firearm incident on a case-by-case basis,” a press release indicated.

TSA may issue a civil penalty, determined by whether a firearm was loaded or there was accessible ammunition. The maximum fine is $15,000 per violation.

It’s illegal to carry firearms in carry-on luggage, regardless if a traveler has a concealed weapons permit. Any person traveling with one must ensure it’s properly
stowed with checked baggage and declared at the ticket counter ahead of boarding.

Airline carriers may have additional requirements for those bringing firearms and ammunition as well; travelers should check in with questions.

They can also utilize the “Can I Bring?” feature here or through TSA’s mobile app.
