Vehicle recovered from Wednesday’s drive-by shooting, leads to drug charges arrest

WILMINGTON — Officers recovered one of the vehicles involved in a drive-by shooting Wednesday. After finding the person it was registered to, officers arrested him on drug charges.

Law enforcement were looking for a black Dodge Charger, one of two vehicles with occupants shooting at each other near the intersection of Burnett and Central boulevards. The Charger was located on Wellington Avenue Thursday.

A silver van had already been recovered.

The vehicle was seized by Wilmington Police Department and the residence the vehicle was registered to was served a search warrant.

Officers located more than 700 grams of marijuana belonging to 21-year-old Jameal Chavis. The suspect was found in a vehicle on Market Street after officers searched his home and he was taken into custody.

Chavis is being charged with felony possession of marijuana, PWIMSD marijuana, felony maintain vehicle/dwelling controlled substance, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, and probation violation.

He is currently being held at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center without bond.
