11K without power in Leland

UPDATE: As of 3 p.m. service has been restored. BEMC spokesperson Brookes Versaggi said a piece of transformer equipment malfunctioned and was quickly replaced.

LELAND — Thousands of customers are in the dark in Brunswick County’s largest municipality.

According to Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation’s outage map, 11,000 Leland customers are without power. Traffic lights along U.S. Hwy. 17 are out and most of the Westgate businesses have lost power as well. The outage began about 2 p.m.

Port City Daily has reached out to BEMC for comment. The outage map estimates power will be restored by 5 p.m.
