LELAND — At its April meeting, the Leland Town Council approved a $33 million dollar budget for the fiscal year 2022-2023. The budget will enable town spending within all departments from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.
The general fund will consist of $30 million and there will be no tax increase. Around 42.2% will cover public safety, with 17.7% helping with public services, including street maintenance division and parks, recreation and cultural services.
Approximately $1.6 million will cover street projects, with $640,000 in grant proceeds to be distributed next year for renovations of Founders Park.
$800,000 will be administered for a new fire engine and $324,000 will enable the purchasing of capital equipment for the street maintenance division.
There also will be 19 new full-time positions covered:
- Staff attorney
- Police officer
- 4 firefighters
- 4 maintenance workers,
- Engineering technician
- 2 GIS positions
- Transportation planner
- 5 building inspectors
Town staff and council members began working on the budget last fall to address the economy, community needs and projects, while considering residential obligations, goal establishment and the fiscal health of the town.
“As the Town continues growing rapidly, it’s important that our staffing and services rise to meet the community’s growing needs,” Mayor Brenda Bozeman said in a press release. “Leland is a wonderful place to call home, and the goals prioritized in this budget will ensure that it continues to be for years to come.”
