
SOUTHEASTERN N.C.—As the election winds down, some races are still feeling the heat, specifically in the N.C. supreme court justice race between Paul Newby and Cheri Beasley. An official recount is underway, which brings us to one of our top read stories of the week, Nov. 16-22: “N.C. Supreme Court justice files election protest in New Hanover County, hearing Monday.”

New Hanover County was one of eight counties Newby filed an election protest in, against incumbent Democrat Cheri Beasley. He cited alleged absentee mail-in irregularities. The two have flip-flopped winning voter margins in the razor-thin race.
College students awakened by law enforcement aggressively apprehending suspect
A group of college roommates were awakened in the middle of the night on Wrightsville Beach to the commotion of officers aggressively apprehending a suspect for a string of car break-ins and stolen vehicles. The officers eventually burst through the roommates’ house to search the home for other suspects.
Need a Covid-19 test?
Covid numbers are on the rise statewide. Though New Hanover County is considered a low-impact county according to the governor’s Covid County Alert System, numerous sites are offering free testing for Covid-19.
Fresh German pretzels and streusel, anyone?
Markus Schmid has turned his passion for making soft German pretzels into a business. Schmid opened The Pretzel Man in Hampstead and is serving a variety of pretzels and pretzel dogs, plus sweet streusel, to the public.
The Harrelson Center expands
The Harrelson Center is in its final phase of construction at its 4th Street campus, which will double in size from 30,000 to 60,000 square feet. It also will include a 10,000 square feet event space, slated for completion in the first quarter of 2021.

New Hanover Community Endowment, Inc. loan
The short-term, interest-free loan of $100,000 from New Hanover County is intended to help the new endowment finance legal, consulting and financial services while it waits for the sale to close — a months-long process expected to wrap up in the first quarter of 2021.
Lincoln Elementary student hit by stray bullet on playground
On Friday, Nov. 13, a 6-year-old at Lincoln Elementary was struck in the jaw by a stray bullet that officials think came from a property nearby. Parents had a lot of problems in the way the incident was handled.
