NEW HANOVER COUNTY — New Hanover County’s positive Covid-19 case count has nearly doubled in 11 days, on track to surpass 1,000 cases by Tuesday or Wednesday.

On June 18, the county had 477 positive cases identified. As of Monday, it had 951.

This represents a dramatic increase in the rate of positive new cases identified; it took 24 days for April 1st’s case count of 39 to double. Nearly 50 new people daily tested positive last week, a fivefold increase compared to the first week of the month.

Though testing has ramped up, experts do not attribute the increase in identified positive cases to testing alone. Relaxed social behaviors are to blame for some portion of the increase. To prevent the spread of the virus, experts ask all residents to practice the three Ws: wear a mask, wash hands frequently, and wait 6 ft. apart.

Outbreaks of two or more positive cases have been identified in the following congregate settings in New Hanover County: Davis Health Care Center, Liberty Commons, and Northchase Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Salvation Army of the Cape Fear emergency shelter, New Hanover County Detention Center, and Milestone Learning Center.

After a state representative criticized the hospital for withholding information, New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) began sharing key Covid-19 stats on its website Friday, WECT reported.

NHRMC has seen 151 total patients hospitalized for Covid-19 to date, with 98 discharged. The hospital is averaging 28 patients daily hospitalized for the virus. A hub for surrounding counties, 24 people in total have died at NHRMC after contracting the virus. Nearly 40 hospital staff members have contracted the virus.

Find a testing place or check for symptoms through the state’s new Covid-19 resources.
