SOUTHEAST N.C. — The 4th of July won’t be the same this year thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic which has seen fireworks shows across the region canceled — but there are still some fireworks displays planned.

With major cancelations across the state, North Carolina Fire Marshal Mike Causey addressed concerns with residents taking it upon themselves to light up the night.

“As a result of the coronavirus situation, many professional fireworks display shows have been canceled — but that does not mean people should have your own backyard fireworks show. If fireworks are not handled properly, celebrations could end with a trip to the hospital,” according to a press release from Causey.

Specifically, in Southeastern N.C., the proximity to South Carolina makes it much easier for residents to take a quick trip south to stock up on illegal fireworks (since they are permitted in South Carolina).

Some fireworks are permitted in N.C., however, they are typically sparklers and other incendiary devices that do not leave the ground. It’s not just officials being too cautious, each year fireworks cause a number of injuries that require trips to the hospital.

“More than 9,000 people nationwide were treated for fireworks-related injuries in 2018, with 62 percent of them occurring during the month surrounding the Fourth of July (June 22-July 22). During that period, firecrackers were the number one cause of injuries, accounting for 19 percent of the estimated injuries. For children under 5 years of age, sparklers accounted for more than half of the total estimated injuries,” according to the release.

Causey encourages residents to attend professional displays instead of hosting their own ‘backyard’ fireworks event and even created a list of all of the professional shows going on this week.

Here is a list of all the public fireworks displays taking place in North Carolina this year:
