WILMINGTON — Governor Cooper’s stay-home order has impacted the lives of every North Carolinian in some way by restricting nonessential travel and, in New Hanover County, that includes taking a trip to the landfill.

The weekends are typically a busier time for residential traffic at the landfill which is why the county is working to get the message out to residents.

“The landfill is operating with normal hours, but is only accepting municipal solid waste from commercials haulers and debris from local contractors for the time being. In addition, the Household Hazardous Waste operations, including the HazWagon, are not open currently,” according to the county.

Essential travel is somewhat vague in the governor’s order, but the county is making it clear that heading to the dump is not essential.

“Under the Governor’s order, residents shouldn’t travel unless it is essential, which is why we have limited our landfill operations to commercial haulers and contractors and also closed our household hazardous waste operations,” Environmental Management Director Joe Suleyman said. “We know that there will be a lot of people cleaning out their attics and organizing closets, and they will have trash they want to discard. But we’re asking you to wait and bring those items once we reopen the landfill to the general public. We hope that will be in just a few weeks, but right now, we are encouraging you to just stay home.”
