WILMINGTON — Driving through standing water might not seem like a big deal but the Wilmington Fire Department is urging residents to avoid doing so after heavy rains Thursday morning.

“The New Hanover County 911 Dispatch is beginning to receive numerous calls for stranded motorists, hydroplaning and wrecks due to the flooded streets. As the heavy rain bands move through our area, streets will continue to flood then drain. We are still experiencing many road closures due to railroad work. We ask for everyone to stay alert,” Wilmington Fire Department Spokeswoman Natosha Vincent said.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy rains and winds are expected throughout today and residents should be aware of the possibility of falling trees or limbs.
