Breaking: CSX closing nearly 30 Wilmington rail-crossing intersections, contractor delays could keep them closed indefinitely

The City of Wilmington appears to have been caught off guard by the closings.

WILMINGTON — The CSX railroad company is closing (or has already closed) 27 roadways in the Wilmington area. According to CSX, a problem with a contractor means there’s no timetable for the crossings to reopen.

According to Angela Nelis, spokeswoman for Southern Commercial Development, a contractor for CSX, workers will begin removing current crossings this week in order to replace them (work began on some crossings yesterday).

However, an additional contractor hired to provide asphalt is experiencing a breakdown at its plant — leading to an indefinite delay.

The work was initially scheduled to last two to five days, but after the asphalt plant broke down, there is no timetable.

“Now I don’t know,” Nelis said. “CSX will rip the crossings out, but it’ll stay out until they get asphalt to repair it.”

City of Wilmington spokeswoman Malissa Talbert said the she had received only limited information about the closings. The city has posted several individual closings on social media, but there has been no mention of the total 27 closing planned throughout the week.

The Wilmington Police Department issued the follow list of closures, but noted that they are “subject to change.”
