WILMINGTON — Libertarian candidate Ethan Bickley today ended his campaign for North Carolina State Senate District 9, endorsing former rival, Republican incumbent Michael Lee.

According to an email from Bickley, he ended his campaign “earlier in the month,” saying he was “unable to commit [to] the campaign due to new employment opportunities.”

(Editor’s note: After initially indicating interest in participating in a candidate interview series, Bickley never answered follow-up attempts to get in touch with him.)

Bickley wrote that he “thought long and hard about whether or not to endorse anyone else in this election.”

In the end, Bickley decided to endorse Lee.

“First of all, I apologize to the Libertarian Party for having to discontinue my campaign. I really wanted to make an impact on my community.  I now feel that by endorsing Senator Lee, my candidacy can still have an impact by asking my supporters to make their votes count,” Bickley wrote.

Bickley spoke of Lee’s qualifications in responding to GenX and Hurricane Florence.

“I am particularly impressed with his efforts to provide relief from Hurricane Florence and to protect our drinking waters with the bill he wrote and we saw passed earlier this year – the Water Safety Act,” Bickley wrote.

“I hope my endorsement of Senator Lee will provide some direction to those unsure of how to vote next Tuesday,” he concluded.
