Drunken driver charged in death of Wilmington bicyclist

WILMINGTON — Charges have been filed against Brett Matthews, 45, for the death of another Wilmington man who was on struck while on a bicycle Friday night.

“Matthews, of Wilmington, was turning left onto Banbury Lane from Gregory Road when he struck a bicyclist who was traveling in the opposite direction, toward Matthews. Police responded to the intersection around 9:25 p.m. where the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. It was determined Matthews was impaired, and he was charged with DWI,” according to Wilmington spokeswoman Jennifer Dandron.

“Upon conclusion of the investigation, officers with the WPD traffic unit obtained warrants for Matthews’ arrest. In addition to the DWI, he is charged with felony death by vehicle, failure to yield left turn and a window tint violation,” she concluded. 

Matthews is being held under a $25,000 secured bond.
