WILMINGTON — The remains of a man who went missing in 2012 have been found and identified in a wooded area behind Walmart in Monkey Junction.
John Calvin Pensyl remains were found by a construction crew working in the area, according to Spokesperson for the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
NHCSO was called to the scene who then called a professor from UNCW to confirm the remains were human. Once confirmed, investigators collected the remains and they were sent to East Carolina University where an identification was made using dental records, Brewer said.
There is no foul play suspected, according to Brewer, but the remains were severely decomposed by time, weather, and animals.
Pensyl was first reported as missing in 2012. He was 20-years-old at the time. The missing person case was handled by the Wilmington Police Department.
WPD Spokesperson Jennifer Dandron said Pensyl was last seen when his father dropped him at a bus stop near Lowe’s Home Improvement at 5110 South College Road in May of 2012. Pensyl’s home address is listed as a Carolina Beach address.
Pensyl suffered from schizophrenia according to Dandron.
