Here’s what to do with old electronics that Santa replaced in Wilmington

WILMINGTON — Christmas has come and gone. Maybe Santa delivered a brand-new TV or computer leaving residents with the question of what to do with old electronics. Residents of the City of Wilmington are in luck as the city provides electronics recycling as part of its services.

The city’s curbside e-waste collection program began in 2015, and allows customers to place used televisions, computers, and computer monitors and other electronics curbside for pickup at no charge.

“Since the program’s inception in 2015, approximately 210 tons of e-waste has been recycled. In 2017 alone, city trash customers recycled 85 tons of electronics,” according to the City of Wilmington.

The city also provides recycling pickup for holiday debris like large cardboard boxes and excess items that do not fit into the blue carts.

Recycling that will not fit in the cart can be placed curbside in a paper bag or box and will be picked up with regular recycling services. Cardboard boxes should be broken down and flattened.

The following items can be recycled, according to the city.

  • Aluminum cans
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Tin and steel cans
  • Newspaper, including all inserts
  • Mixed plastic containers identified with #1 – #7 on the container’s bottom
  • Rigid plastic (Ex. laundry baskets and plastic tubs)
  • Mixed paper, including magazines and junk mail
  • Catalogs (under 2 inches thick)
  • Cardboard boxes(flatten first)
  • Cereal and food boxes
  • Gabled drink containers, juice boxes, carton drinks
  • File folders and computer paper
  • Metal pots and pans without plastic handles
