WILMINGTON — For those in the Cape Fear Region who celebrated Christmas with a live Christmas Tree and who are wondering what to do with the tree, look no further. Port City Daily has compiled a list of local entities that will help residents dispose of used trees.

For New Hanover County residents, the county will offer free tree recycling starting the day after Christmas.

“Our Environmental Management Department is going to be offering free Christmas tree recycling beginning on Dec. 26 through Jan. 15 for New Hanover County residents,” Communications and Outreach Coordinator for New Hanover County Jessica Loeper said.

There will be four drop-off locations for NHC residents.

  • Home Depot, 5511 Carolina Beach Road
  • Home Depot, 210 Eastwood Road
  • Ogden Park, 225 Ogden Park Drive (near the baseball fields)
  • New Hanover County Landfill, 5210 US Highway 421 North

“Real Christmas trees are biodegradable and we are able to recycle them into mulch or compost,” said Environmental Management Director Joe Suleyman. “So we encourage all residents to bring your tree to one of our four locations in New Hanover County to be recycled.”

The City of Wilmington will offer tree pickup with regularly scheduled trash services.

“The city will pick up live Christmas trees put to the curb at no charge as part of our regular weekly yard waste pick up service for city trash customers,” Communications Manager for the City of Wilmington Malissa Talbert said.

At Carolina Beach, the town is teaming up with the Cape Fear Surfrider Foundation to help restore sand dunes with recycled trees on Jan. 20. The event page can be found online.

“Residents can leave their trees on the curb for free pickup by the town throughout the month of January,” Hannah Almeter administrative support for Carolina Beach said.

In Pender County, trees can be disposed of starting Dec. 30 until Jan. 15 at locations in both Hampstaed and Rocky Point.

In Brunswick County, residents can drop their trees at the landfill or at a convenience center.

“The Brunswick County Landfill will be accepting live Christmas trees for recycling at no charge from all county residents and/or property owners between Dec. 26 – Jan. 31, 2018. The convenience Centers will accept Christmas trees during this time also, however, there is a $5.00 charge per tree.

All trees must be free of all decorations, lights, stands, etc.,” Public Information Officer Amanda Hutcheson for Brunswick County said.
