Police: ‘no random shooter on the loose’ after Marine is killed

WILMINGTON — With no arrests in the still-unexplained shooting death of an active duty Marine downtown, Wilmington Police have addressed concerns that there is a shooter at large.

Linda Rawley, spokeswoman for the department, said, “There is no random shooter on the loose. This was an isolated incident and our investigators are handling it as such. As soon as we are ready to release more info we will make sure you have it.”

In a release from the department, issued shortly afterwards, spokeswoman Jennifer Dandron said, “we can confirm we have a person of interest in the case. No charges have been filed yet. Once again, we do want to ease any concerns as this was an isolated incident.”

Yesterday, police confirmed the victim was Corporal Edwin Estrada, of the United States Marine Corps. The fatal shooting is still being investigated.

According to the Police Department, 27-year-old Estrada of Jacksonville was found Sunday morning, after police responded to 273 N. Front St. around 6:15 a.m. Officers found Estrada, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

According to Captain John P. Roberts, spokesman for Camp Lejeune, “Corporal Edwin Estrada, a CH-53 helicopter mechanic, (was) assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter
Squadron 464, Marine Aircraft Group 29.”

According to Roberts, Estrada was from Los Angeles, and joined the Marines in July of 2014. He was recently promoted to Corporal in July. Estrada had been awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.
