NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The county Board of Education will hold an interim meeting to discuss redistricting three so-called “satellites” in the Porters Neck area.
According to a release from the New Hanover County Schools:
“Blair is currently operating from the new Porter’s Neck Elementary School while their school is being reconstructed. Porter’s Neck Elementary is located within one of the Blair satellites that is up for discussion. Three students who live within one of the satellites near Porter’s Neck would be impacted. The Board is concerned about all students and has decided to reconsider this issue because of the unique set of circumstances these satellites have created.”
The potential redistricting would affect three students who live near the new Blair Elementary School, also known by the county as the “Porter’s Neck Elementary School.” Despite their proximity to the school, these students will – under the current school zoning – be bused across the county to Castle Hayne Elementary.
One of these students is the daughter of the Petty family, who live next door to the school. The Petty family appealed the Board’s zoning decision earlier this summer; the board rejected the family’s appeal in late June.
The Board’s meeting will be held at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the Dale K. Spencer Building, 1802 South 15th St.
