Brunswick County bus driver fired for driving over washed-out road

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The county Board of Education approved the dismissal of a bus driver after an incident captured on film Tuesday morning.

According to spokeswoman Jessica Swencki, Board of Education members approved a motion to dismiss Marsha Bellamy McMillian after she circumvented barricades on Highway 133 in Brunswick County earlier today. McMillian was filmed by Bruce Felker, a Brunswick County resident and former firefighter. On camera, McMillian appears to drive a busload of children through a washed-out stretch of highway.

Felker is heard reacting negatively to the footage and can clearly be heard to say: “Bus 372, Brunswick County, you’re fired.”

After receiving the footage, Brunswick County Board of Education members met to consider appropriate action. Swencki called McMillian’s decision to bypass road closure barricades “inexcusable.” McMillian had been employed by Brunswick County since 2007.
