‘Active shooter’ drill set to be conducted Wednesday morning New Hanover Government Center

WILMINGTON  — Emergency vehicles will converge on the New Hanover County Government Center Wednesday morning, but it’s only a test. The county is conducting an active shooter drill at the building Wednesday morning.

New Hanover County Spokeswoman Jessica Looper said the drill will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday and will be limited to the Information Technology wing of the building, which is located at 230 Government Center Drive in Wilmington.

Drill-associated activities will also take place around associated exits and parking lots, she said.

Emergency vehicles and personnel will be present in the Government Center Parking Lot. The drill includes IT employees, Emergency Management, EMS, fire and county law enforcement.

“The drill will help inform department-specific and facility-specific action plans and county-agency response plans,” Looper said through a news release. “The countywide policy and plan is in place to respond to active-shooter incidents to ensure that county employees are prepared should an unlikely incident of violence occur.”

A larger drill, involving more county operations, is anticipated in the future, she said.

The county will remain open for business throughout the drill, however access to the situation area will be limited to drill participants. No other county operations will be impacted by the drill during that time.
