LUMBERTON — Two Wilmington teens were killed in an early-morning crash in Lumberton on Monday. Detectives suspect alcohol may be a factor in the wreck.
Dana Michelle Wilson, 18, of Bluff Circle in Wilmington, and her passenger, Ryan Michael Menke, 18, of Mendenhall Drive in Wilmington, were both killed in a two-car crash on U.S. 74 near N.C. 41 South, just before 1 a.m. Monday, according to Lumberton Police Department Capt. Terry Parker, of the Criminal Investigative Division.
Officers responded to the scene after receiving a call about a motor-vehicle crash. There, they found that a 1989 Oldsmobile driven by 38-year-old Broderick Jones, of Spruce Street in Proctorville, had been traveling east in the westbound lane of U.S. 74.
Jones’ vehicle struck the 2005 Ford Focus being driven by Wilson, killing her and Menke.
Jones was transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton and was later flown to another hospital for treatment. His injuries are considered life-threatening.
“Both vehicles were destroyed in the crash, and alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash,” Parker said.
