WILMINGTON – As the Battleship North Carolina prepares for major renovations, money for the project continues to roll in.
The Wilmington Hammerheads FC became the most recent group to give to the Generations Campaign, the fundraising effort created by the nonprofit group The Friends of the Battleship to pay for repairs.
According to a news release, the professional soccer team donated $2,000. The money was raised from an online auction of special camouflage jerseys worn by players during Military Night at Legion Stadium, held July 2.
Funds from the Generations Campaign will help pay for much-needed repairs to the ship’s steel hull. The project, which is expected to start soon, will cost about $17 million and take approximately 18 months to complete. The Battleship North Carolina, which has been docked across the Cape Fear River from downtown Wilmington since the 1960s, has been seeing a steady increase of visitors in recent years. It will remain open during renovations.
