Beginning Saturday, April 30, the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will be performing emergency sewer repair work on South College Road at the intersection with Park Avenue that will cause lane and road closures for a week.
According to CFPUA’s Chief Communications Officer Mike McGill, the work will be done 24 hours a day for seven days.
“While the repair is standard in nature – the replacement of a manhole – work at this site is difficult given the high volume of traffic on South College Road,” McGill said in a release. “Infrastructure in the area dates back to the 1960s. Because of the age and condition of the failing manhole, CFPUA will completely replace it. The work is being done around the clock to minimize traffic impacts and to complete the work as quickly as possible.”
The manhole is in the right lane on the northbound side of College Road at the intersection with Park Avenue between Oleander Drive and Wrightsville Avenue. The intersection of Park Avenue and Pine Grove Drive will also be affected, as Pine Grove Drive will be closed in that area.
The two northbound lanes will be closed in the work zone, located between Peachtree Avenue and Park Avenue. The center turn lane and one southbound lane will be used for lane shifts to ensure there will be two lanes of traffic flow in each direction. Drivers coming from Kerr, Park and Peachtree Avenues will only be allowed to make right-hand turns onto College Road.
Signs have been installed to help direct traffic, and speed limits in the area will be reduced. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes.
