A Leland man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with an assault at an assisted living home on Saturday.
William Almon King, 62, has been charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury and involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of 81-year-old James Wescott, according to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Emily Flax.
King and Wescott were both residents of Leland House Assisted Living and Memory Care at 1935 Lincoln Road in Leland, Flax said. Deputies responded to an assault between the two residents at the assisted living home at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, when it was reported that the victim was pointing and waving a cane at King.
“Mr. King told Mr. Wescott to stop waving his cane, which he did not, and Mr. King stood up and struck Mr. Wescott,” Flax said.
Wescott reportedly fell to the floor, hit his head and lost consciousness. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where doctors determined he had massive bleeding to his brain, Flax said.
King was arrested on the assault charge later that day, Flax said. But around 9 a.m. Sunday, deputies were notified that Wescott succumbed to his brain injury and died at the hospital. King was then faced with an additional charge of involuntary manslaughter.
King is booked at the Brunswick County Jail under a $100,000 secured bond.
