A much-loved local film festival is throwing its support behind budding state filmmakers.
Cucalorus, in partnership with the N.C. Film Office, recently launched its Filmed in N.C. fund for indie artists.
“Cucalorus is excited to be entering the funding side of the creative process,” executive director Dan Brawley said. “Funding emerging filmmakers and low-budget projects is essential to developing a healthy creative ecosystem and builds on our continued commitment to supporting the development of bold new works by artists working here in North Carolina.”
The joint initiative is aimed at supporting permanent residents of the state, as well as full-time college students, as they shoot for independently produced films or video projects.
While the program will back emerging artists, it is also open to established filmmakers “with a proven record for producing singular and original work,” according to Cucalorus.
The fund is also geared toward projects that show potential for making a meaningful impact on the community and generating substantial economic activity in the state. Female, black and Latino filmmakers will be given priority.
Funding will range from $500 to $3,000 per project. The application is open now through Jan. 5. Applicants will be notified in early February.
