The Brunswick County Board of Education is seeking input from staff and the community at large in the selection of a new district leader.
As part of its monthslong search process for a superintendent, the board has created an online survey for parents and county residents. Paper copies of the survey are available at central office, as well as in the front office of each school.
All surveys must be completed by Friday, Jan. 23. Results will then be compiled by the N.C. School Boards Association, and presented at the regular board meeting on Feb. 3.
Community members can also tell board members in person what they think during the public comment portion of two upcoming board meetings–Tuesday, Jan. 6, and Tuesday, Feb. 3. Both meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. in the David R. Sandifer building in the Brunswick County Government Complex.
In addition, all employees of Brunswick County Schools will have an opportunity to complete a separate staff survey.
The surveys are a first step in the lengthy and involved process to hire a permanent replacement for Superintendent Dr. Edward Pruden. Last month, a divided board voted to terminate Superintendent Dr. Edward Pruden’s contract effective Nov. 30. The school board later appointed Les Tubb, former Career and Technical Education (CTE) Director for Brunswick County Schools, as the interim superintendent.

According to the NSCBA, the selection and hiring of a school district superintendent can take anywhere between six to eight months. Board member John Thompson said in a previous interview that the board has budgeted $26,000 for consultation fees and other related costs.
By mid-February, board members should be prepared to select a first round of interviewees. Finalists would be chosen the following month, with final interviews coming in April. If all goes according to schedule, the Brunswick County school board should be ready to introduce the district’s new leader by mid-April 2015, with an official start date of June 1.
