Sprigging continues in the latest stage of a major renovation at Wilmington Municipal Golf Course.
“The sprigs, which are 3-6 inch grass stems, are hand-planted. While contractors work to renovate the greens, bunkers and practice putting green, city golf course staff are repairing other parts of the course, such as the rough, fairways and tee boxes,” said an update from the city’s communications office Friday.
The city fully closed the course in May for the project doubling the size of the greens in their restoration. The course, built in the 1920s, has never received such an overhaul.
Other improvements are addressing irrigation, drainage, bunkers and cart paths.
“Despite delays from the weather, the $1.2 million project is still on schedule,” said the city. “The course is expected to be ready for play in October.”
The golf course, park bond funds and green fee increases are funding the project.
