N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory has appointed local surgeon Dr. Charles Kays to a four-year term on the Cape Fear Community College Board of Trustees.
According to a release issued earlier this week, Kays has a long history of community involvement, including eight years on the New Hanover County Airport Authority. He has also served on the Honor Flight Board of Directors and as an Honor Flight physician.
He was president of the N.C. Azalea Festival in 2012, and has served in leadership roles on numerous area medical society and as chairman of the department of surgery at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He is an American Cancer Society Silent Angel Award recipient for his work with breast cancer patients.
In addition to McCrory’s appointment of Kays, New Hanover County Commissioners selected Mary Lyons Mitchell to serve four years on CFCC’s board.
Mitchell, director of auxiliary programs for Cape Fear Academy and a member of the Junior League of Wilmington, is also an event coordinator for Michael Lee, Republican candidate for the District 9 seat in the N.C. Senate. In her application, Mitchell cites her professional experience and passion for education as assets on the college’s board of trustees.
The New Hanover County Board of Education selected William Turner to a four-year term and John Melia to a two-year term. The district did not release any further details on the appointments.
The CFCC Board of Trustees is made up of 13 members–four appointed by the governor, four by county commissioners, four by the school board and one by the Pender County Board of Commissioners.
