A West Virginia man died Friday night after he was struck by a car while attempting to cross Lake Park Boulevard.
According to Carolina Beach Police Chief Ken Hinkle, 82-year-old Walter Shaffer attempted to cross Lake Park Boulevard at about 10:30 p.m. Friday when he was struck by a northbound car. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he died.
Shaffer and his family were staying at the Pelican Watch condos, which is where he was trying to cross when he was struck.
No charges or citations have been issued to the driver, Hinkle said. Hinkle said he would complete a final review of the crash report today but didn’t expect to issue any charges.
“At this point it looks like a terrible tragedy where a gentleman stepped out in front of a vehicle,” Hinkle said.
