A Wilmington woman died in a vehicle collision on U.S. 17 in Pender County on Tuesday.
Betty Jane Parkerson, 72, of Wilmington, died in a wreck that occurred at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to 1st Sgt. W.L. Thurston with the N. C. State Highway Patrol.
Parkerson was traveling north on U.S. 17 toward Hampstead in a 2004 GMC Envoy. While she was slowing down to make a right turn, a woman in a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban traveling behind Parkerson struck the rear of her vehicle.
Parkerson’s vehicle traveled off the road and she was ejected from the vehicle, Thurston said.
The driver of the Suburban–Teresa Audino, 56, of Hampstead–has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
Parkerson had two chihuahuas in the car with her at the time of the wreck. One was found and the other is missing.
Anyone who finds a lost chihuahua in the area is asked to contact the N.C. State Highway Patrol in Pender County at 910-296-1311.
