West Brunswick High School Principal Brock Ahrens resigned today.

According to Brunswick County Schools Spokeswoman Jessica Swencki, Ahrens’ resignation is effective June 16.

Ahrens’ resignation followed the Brunswick County Board of Education’s decision to allow 18 West Brunswick seniors who met all academic requirements for graduation to participate in Saturday’s commencement exercises. While all students met graduation requirements, Ahrens originally ruled they could not participate in the ceremony because of attendance issues.

“In protest,” Ahrens resigned, Swencki said.

The board of education made its decision outside a regular, special called or emergency meeting, which Port City Daily has challenged pursuant to the North Carolina Open Meetings Law.

“Whereas the public bodies that administer the legislative, policy-making, quasi-judicial, administrative, and advisory functions of North Carolina and its political subdivisions exist solely to conduct the people’s business, it is the public policy of North Carolina that the hearings, deliberations, and actions of these bodies be conducted openly,” N.C. G.S. 143-318.9 states.

Before joining West Brunswick in 2012, Ahrens served as principal of South Brunswick Middle School in Boiling Spring Lakes, where he was credited with the school’s turnaround, both in academic and overall performance. (Read previous story)
