The Hollywood Reporter broke the news yesterday that the Grammy Award-winner, whose appearances in film have included “Sling Blade” and “Panic Room,” will join the CBS series as a rival for Big Jim, the Chester’s Mill town councilman played by Dean Norris.

Yoakam’s website confirmed the news, stating: “Dwight will soon be appearing in multiple episodes of the thrilling CBS series ‘Under the Dome,’ based on Stephen King’s best-seller.”

Yoakam will be playing the role of barbershop owner Lyle Chumley, who reportedly has a complicated relationship with Big Jim and was once romantically linked to his wife, played by fellow “Dome” newcomer Sherry Stringfield.

“Under the Dome” started filming in Wilmington earlier this month, picking up where its first season’s production left off in 2013. The show, which proved a summer hit for CBS, films in locations in Wilmington, Southport and Burgaw.

Production for season two is scheduled to continue through July, with the premiere episode set to air Monday, June 30.
