The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority reported a sewer spill Thursday near the Suncourt Villas Pump Station off Pine Grove Drive in Wilmington.
Crews responded to and stopped the overflow, which was discovered at 9:12 a.m. near the pump station at 1425 Suncourt Villas Drive. A cracked four-inch force main was determined to be the cause.
About 4,650 gallons of wastewater spilled from the pipe and 3,650 gallons were recovered using vactor trucks, the CFPUA said. However, approximately 1,000 gallons reached a drainage ditch on Pine Grove Road that flows into Hewlett’s Creek.
Water quality testing was conducted at various locations at and around the site, and the spill was reported to the N.C. Division of Water Quality. Due to the size of the spill, which was described as relatively small, and dilution expected from rain overnight, further samples are not expected to be required, the authority said.
